Polly Preventza Advisory Board
Polly Preventza is a member of Sympheron Partner’s Advisory Board. Mrs. Preventza is the founder and President of MPL Advisors, a boutique investment banking advisory firm based in Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Preventza has over 15 years of professional experience as an investment banker advising clients on mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance transactions. Polly Preventza is also a Founder and Managing Partner at Navi Capital Partners, a Los Angeles based private investment firm that specializes in investing in profitable lower-middle market companies in Western United States.
In her career, Ms. Preventza has advised clients on over $60 billion of M&A and financing transactions, with a particular focus and expertise in the healthcare industry. Prior to founding MPL Advisors, Ms. Preventza was a Principal at the Bank of America / Merrill Lynch Investment Banking group in New York, specializing in M&A. Prior to joining Banc of America/Merrill Lynch, Ms. Preventza worked at Morgan Stanley Corporate Finance in Los Angeles and at Lehman Brothers Investment Banking in New York.
Ms. Preventza has worked on a wide range of transactions, including Cardinal’s spinoff of CareFusion ($4.7Bn), WellPoint’s divestiture and sale of its Pharmacy Benefit Management business unit to Express Scripts ($4.7Bn), Alpharma’s sale and defense against the hostile bid by King Pharmaceuticals ($1.6Bn), and Boston Scientific’s multiple divestitures, several leveraged buyouts, and successful capital raises.
Ms. Preventza holds a Ph.D. and a Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from Caltech University in Pasadena, with a minor concentration in Finance, and a B.A degree in Electrical Engineering from National Technical University of Athens, Greece with highest honors. Ms. Preventza has also completed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. She is fluent in French, Italian, Spanish and Greek.
Peter Hoang Chairman, Advisory Board
Peter Hoang serves at the Chairman of Sympheron Partners Advisory Board. Mr. Hoang is the Senior Vice President, Business Development & Strategy at Bellicum Pharmaceuticals, where he is head of business development, corporate development and business strategy. He has over 18 years of finance and deal experience in investment banking and venture capital. Prior to Bellicum, he was the Managing Director, Innovations, for The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where he headed the institution’s new venture formation and development effort.
Prior to MD Anderson, Peter was a senior investment banker, most recently as Managing Director and Head of Healthcare Mergers & Acquisitions advisory for CIT Group, a New York corporate and investment banking firm with over $65 billion in assets (NYSE: CIT). Previously, he also served in the M&A departments at Oppenheimer, J.P. Morgan, Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank. He earned high honors distinction with an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA and a B.A. from Yale University.
Jim Spielman Managing Partner & CEO
Jim Spielman is the founding Managing Partner and CEO of Sympheron Partners and its subsidiaries. Mr. Spielman has over 20 years professional experience advising publicly traded and private corporate clients on mergers, acquisitions, dispositions leveraged buyouts and capital markets transactions representing several billion in transaction value.
Prior Sympheron, Mr. Spielman was an investment banker in Houlihan Lokey’s Global Investment Banking Group in New York and Bank of America Securities’ Global Investment Banking Group in New York specializing in M&A and corporate finance. Jim’s transactional experience includes IPO underwriting, equity and equity-linked follow-ons, bond issuances and private placements as well as assisting clients in identifying strategic acquisition targets, leading competitive buyside and sellside processes, structuring leveraged buyouts, negotiating purchase agreements, crafting activist shareholder defense strategies, and assisting clients in raising capital.
Jim holds an MBA with a concentration in finance from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a BS in Accounting with distinction from Minnesota State University. Jim started his early career with Arthur Andersen LLP’s Assurance and Business Advisory Services division and is a California licensed CPA (inactive). Jim has also held senior financial roles with Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC), Buy.com (NASDAQ:BUYX), Health Care Property Investors (NYSE:HCP), and Intelligent InSites.
Mr. Spielman currently holds the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Series 7, 24, 27, 63, and 79 securities licenses.
Todd Hickman Managing Director
Todd Hickman is a Managing Director at Sympheron. Mr. Hickman has over ten years of professional experience advising publicly traded and private corporate clients on mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, leveraged buyouts, leveraged finance, and capital markets transactions representing several billion in transaction value.
Prior to Sympheron, Mr. Hickman served as Senior Vice President at Bank of America’s Mortgage Servicing division in Los Angeles where he led various technology and operations initiatives for their Short Sale, Foreclosure and REO businesses. Previously, he was with Oppenhiemer’s Investment Banking division in New York specializing in M&A and corporate finance in the telecommunications sector. Prior to that, Mr. Hickman held senior investment banking roles with Credit Suisse and J.P. Morgan in Los Angeles and San Francisco focusing on M&A and leveraged finance across a range of industries including telecommunications, real estate, gaming, engineering and construction. He began his early career as a nuclear submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy and is a veteran.
Mr. Hickman received an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a BS in Marine Engineering from the United States Naval Academy.
Edward Shen Managing Director
Edward Shen is a Managing Director at Sympheron. Mr. Shen has over ten years of professional experience in the financial services industry.
Prior to Sympheron, Mr. Shen served as Vice President at Citigroup Global Markets in the Securities Finance division where his team developed proprietary trading programs for alternative securities lending platforms. He joined Citi as an Associate in the Sales & Trading program. Previously, he began his career in finance at Morgan Stanley.
Mr. Shen received an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a BA in Psychology/Business from the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds Series 7, 63 and 79 licenses.
Sean Crowley Partner
Sean Crowley is a Partner with Sympheron Partners. Mr. Crowley has over ten years of professional experience advising publicly traded and private corporate clients on mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, leveraged buyouts and capital markets transactions representing over $50 billion in transaction value.
Prior to Sympheron, Mr. Crowley served as Senior Director in the Investment Banking division at Wells Fargo Securities in San Francisco. Previously he was with J.P. Morgan’s Real Estate Investment Banking division in New York and CIBC World Markets’ Leveraged Finance division in Los Angeles. Mr. Crowley began his early career with Ernst & Young as a Senior Telecom, Media & Entertainment Consultant. His experience includes numerous M&A, debt and equity transactions in the real estate, gaming, lodging and financial sponsor industries.
Mr. Crowley received an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
